This is a puppy. Muscles have to develop. Routines have to be established. But the main thing is the muscles. I have helped out thousands of folks. And when someone is kind enough, to invite me into their home, to help them figure out why they are not succeeding with training their dog.
I take this very seriously. Because I know how frustrated, upset and just plain crazy. You can get, when you run into these little bumps on your puppy training road. And, I’m thinking about the life of that dog.
When I’m in someones home, I ask a lot of questions. Essentially I’m always taking surveys, so it makes it that much easier to help the next person out. After asking thousands of moms, “How long did it take to potty train your baby“. The length of time it usually takes to potty train is, “two and a half”, to “three and a half”, years old. For most kids. Some a little sooner. Some a little later.
I’ve heard dog trainers, tell people that in as little as two weeks you can housebreak your puppy. Yea, OK that’s just not gonna happen.
So, when you follow the standard housebreaking advice, that’s been taught a long, long time. With out any, real good success. Please do not think, something is wrong with your puppy. Or that you have defective merchandise. The only thing that is defective here, is the information you where given.

I enjoy reading through your articles. We’ve had our puppy less than a week, and he already gets the concept of ‘poop inside bad’ ‘poop outside good.’ SO I thought, hey, swell. He’s housebroken. After reading this, I realize that someone is always in and out, he’s only crated for 2 hours. So, he gets to go every 2-3 hours! I don’t know what we’d find after an 8 hour day… after all, like you said, their muscles aren’t strong enough to hold their water and whatever else for that long! Keep up the good work, I’ll keep reading. 🙂

EXCELLENT, a lot of people would never figure that out. They would wind up getting angry with their dog and think he was being spiteful or something. Your little guy is lucky he has you.
I just got a puppy this Sunday and she’s 8 weeks old. My husband and I are out of the house by 9am and don’t get back until 6pm. We keep her in a crate until we get home. We take her outside to use the bathroom before work and as soon as we get home from work. Then for the rest of the evening we just try to watch her and catch her if shes about to poop. We yell NO and take her outside it seems to be working. However, when it comes to peeing we cant seem to catch her and she pees everywhere! I would feel really bad leaving her in the crate all the time. I was told to scold her when she pees. Is this wrong? Please let me know if we are on the right track. Thanks.

Now to your question, you never ever yell at a little puppy for anything. That can potentially create some behavioral problems for you down the line.
